Fire Department

Responsibilities

The Fire Department will respond to an estimated 2,000 emergencies each year.  These emergencies include fires, emergency medical service (EMS) calls, rescues, motor vehicle accidents, hazardous materials spills, citizen assists, etc.

The Fire Department is responsible for:

  • fire suppression
  • fire prevention
  • fire investigation
  • emergency medical services
  • fire hydrant maintenance
  • building maintenance and inspections
  • fire apparatus maintenance
  • emergency management.

The Fire Prevention Bureau inspects all business, commercial, industrial and apartment buildings.  All new commercial buildings are inspected for compliance with the Fire Prevention Code. 

Staff

The Fire Department consists of 38 employees: one Fire Chief, two Assistant Chiefs (Operations, Fire Marshal), one part-time secretary, and 35 full time firefighters.

Equipment

The Department maintains 12 pieces of fire apparatus.  They include three pumpers, one aerial, two life trucks, three staff cars, two utility vehicles, and the Oakway (Mutual Aid) hazardous materials truck which is housed at the Chesterfield Fire Station.
